This is an engaging memoir of the early years of the life Pamela Mountbatten Hicks. The writing is engaging and moves quickly as the writer appears to be a plain spoken woman and she writes in that manner. Her family life as a young girl was conventionally unconventional. As the daughter of Lord Mountbatten and his beautiful and audacious wife Edwina, Pamela and her sister lived in a world of bold face names -- the British royal family, foreign royals, famous politicians etc. and when Hicks speaks of them it's never in a name dropping manner rather in the manner of someone who knew all of these people and interacted with them as part of normal everyday life. Her parents had an open marriage in which her mother's lovers became part of the "family" and from what Hicks says in the book were loved and loving in turn to her and her sister. Lord Mountbatten ultimately also had another partner and she too became part of the extended family. Hicks doesn't spend time on condemning or condoning the situation or whinging that this situation affected her or her sister adversely instead she appears to take it in stride as the "way it was" and just got on with her own life. It is quite obvious that she adored her father and he in turn adored her. Her affection for her mother appears to be less but at no point does she feel the need to bash her mother.I thought that the most fascinating part of the book covered the time she spent in India when in effect she was her father's hostess while he was the Viceroy. She does a very good job of presenting the agonizing her father went through as he tried to decide whether or not to accept the appointment which meant he'd have to leave the Royal Navy to which he was devoted and also have the tremendous task of moving India to independence from Great Britain while balancing the needs and wants of the various factions in Indian politics. Once her father accepts the assignment as his duty and the family moves to India, Hicks does a very fine job of describing her life in that exotic country so far removed from the life she knew in England. It's a tribute to Hicks as a person that she went to India with an open mind and found that she loved the country and the people she met. There is an appreciation of India that comes through in her writing which is quite surprising in that one would expect that a young woman of her background would not have been enthralled by the country based on other accounts people have written of being posted to colonial India. Instead Hicks is quite broken up when her father's viceroyship ends and they return to Great Britain and he resumes his career in the Royal Navy. Some of her most touching writing involves her interactions with and observations of Nehru and Gandhi as well as the servants in the household to whom she became close. Nehru and Gandhi become people and not just historical figures as a result.The book ends when she is in her thirties and is about to marry her husband, David Hicks. Hopefully Hicks will write the story of her marriage and the tragedy that struck the family when her father and one of her sons was killed by an IRA bomb planted on the family boat. On a happier note, I think the fact that she named her daughter India says volumes about her connection to and emotion for the country where she spent part of her youth.

Extremely interesting memoir from a member of the Mountbatten (Battenburg) royal family of Britain, chosen by the book club I belong to. We all loved the book for different reasons. Here are mine:Before reading the book, I had cynical views regarding the intelligence and usefulness of members of the British royal family. I didn't think that they were bright, wise, deep or particularly literate, or that they acted with good social purpose.Reading this book blew those preconceptions out of the water... and to me, any book that changes my opinion with facts is a worthwhile book. In addition this book is a delightful and engaging read.Lady Pamela Hicks writes colourfully and beautifully about her life in England and in diplomatic service outside the UK - with incisive depth and humour, and surprising modesty and lack of class snobbery. My favourite part of the book deals with her diplomatic work in India in the late 1940s, at the time of partition and the creation of Pakistan.Read this book!

I found out about this book when the New York Times published the obituary of Lady Pamela's sister this spring. Highly recommend it for anyone interested in British and Indian history of the early to mid 20th century. Wish the book had kept going past the 1950s. It is a memoir that captured my interest.

The book is ok. The story is really all over the place though. I bought this looking for more about Pamela Hicks life as it dealt with court and other English aristocrats. This book, however, devotes most of its page count to rehashing information one could get from her other book India Remembered.There isn't really enough additional detail added to any point in her life to warrant this book, unless you haven't also already read India Remembered.

If you read a lot of English history.add this to your list. If not, you are likely to be bored. Pamela Hicks provides an interesting view of India during the time of partition. Her father, Lord Mountbatten was the last of theBritish viceroys, She was a teenager at the time. Her recollections reflect her age, that is she focuses on the people, Nehru, Ghandi.without displaying an understanding of the political chaos in which she was living.Hicks was made a lady-in-waiting to the then Princess Elizabeth and was on the fateful Commonwealth Tour when the King died. She was one of the four people staying at Treetops in Kenya when the word finally got through. Her recollections of that time are poignant. She was later to join the remainder of the Commonwealth Tour after the Coronation.She observes the greater demands as a lady-in-waiting to the Queen,. .

An easy read with lots of gossip about her parents, their friends, and the part they played in the end of the Raj. Reading this spurred me on to buy “Indian Summer” which is also easy to read and goes into more detail about the politics and all the politicians active in the twilight of British domination of India. Speaking with contemporary East Indians that I have the privilege of meeting, they are thankful for the outstanding railroad system the Brits left behind. Learning the English language probably gave them a leg up too as we now see them exceeding our country in economic growth. There is a much bigger, more comprehensive book titled, “the Raj” that is not an easy read but something worth plugging through for any scholar or serious student of India. The subject book is an easy place to start getting motivated

Yet they worked tirelessly for others and seemed to be excellent partners in their work together and their compassion for the downtrodden. I am so glad I got this book. As an avid gardener I am always searching for ways to preserve and save food for the off growing season. This book has so much good information in it. It covers Food Drying Methods (including solar), freeze drying, drying times & temps, directions by vegetable or fruit types, drying herbs & spices, making fruit leathers, drying meat & fish, etc. This is by far the best food preservation book on my Kindle.It is packed with useful information, well written and easy to navigate. This book has everything you need to know to safely and effectively dry food. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to dry food or become advanced in drying their own food. I think this is a must have for every gardener! :) I'm actually gonna buy the paperback version too.

This book was a very big disappointment. Written in very simplistic terms with very little helpful info. I had researched a few blogs before buying my food dehydrator and then ordered this book. If you buy a new dehydrator, your booklet will offer more details and hints than this book does. If you get one used spend 20 minutes online and your knowledge will exceed what is written in this book. Also a famous video site has lots of do it yourself insights if you need more.Seriously, I am surprised the publisher printed this "booklet" because even a teenager could put together a better "book report".Simply stated this book lacks any useful insights or details that can easily accessed via your local library, a friend or a search online.

This is a fantastic book on drying foods, a truly great resource. It's very well-written and easy to read and understand. There are recipes as well as how to build drying equipment along with charts on drying times for any vegetable or fruit you can dry. I highly recommend this resource.

It breaks down vegetables and fruit in different chapters explaining how to dehydrate with different methods,Times,etc. I have looked for books and finally , this one was for me! Love it.

I'm midway through the Four Gifts of the King (which looks great on Kindle by the way) and I can't wait to find out how it ends. Steward is a very likable character who is on an adventure through an imaginary land. He has nearly died at least twice, he's gone from poor to rich and back to poor again, and I'm anxious to see what happens to him next. Along with me, four "real" characters in the book (Sam's children) are also reading about Steward. His journey is challenging them to take deep introspective looks at their own lives. It's challenging me in the same way, and I'm curious to see how they interpret the story for themselves and what they are going to do about it. If this book was a Netflix series I’d binge watch it!

Excellent read. This is a book that is fun to read, compelling and keeps pulling you forward with much to keep you mulling over in the days to come. Although the story on the pages is fiction, the bigger story being revealed is not! So much meat and wisdom, delivered in an inviting, entertaining manner. A gift I know will keep on giving to those who open its pages.

Who doesn't love a frame story? This one is in the form of a parable written by a dying father to his four grown children. Readers meet the father and his children early on and learn enough about them to anticipate what the parable will mean to each of them.I read an advance copy of this novel and was impressed by the author's imagination and empathy. I believe readers who love The Pilgrim's Progress and The Chronicles of Narnia will also love the world and characters Mr. Rodin has created.One of the most moving moments for me was when Sam's kids finished the story he'd written and the novel returned to the contemporary setting. Daughter Anna said this, I feel like I've heard my father's voice for the last tie. I don't want to let him go."That reminded me something author Martin Amis said in his interview with the Paris Review. He said his children would know what he was like, what his mind was like, because they read his books. Mr. Rodin brought that concept to life in The Four Gifts of the King. But more than that, much ore than that, this novel brings to readers a deeper understanding of the gifts of righteousness in Jesus, and that is no small feat.

This novel is fantastic! I think the message is so dearly needed in this day and age. I wholeheartedly believe that “The Four Gifts of the King” has the potential to make a lasting impact. This is a book that makes you think about the way you live your life and the way you see the world. R. Scott Rodin utilizes a unique narrative style that adds a great deal of depth and meaning to the story. You’re not just reading a parable, you’re also following along with the journey of contemporary individuals and how they interpret said parable. This is really helpful and encourages readers to apply the parable to their own lives. I also love Rodin’s incredible use of symbolism and imagery. If you’re looking for a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, but also encourages personal contemplation, “The Four Gifts of the King” is a must read. I am really excited to see what the Lord does with this book.

I am not a huge fan of reading books. Nor do I have the time to sit down and read at leisure. That being said this book captivated me within the first 3 pages. The book was a gift and as I started to glance over the first couple pages and pulled me in immediately to the storyline which is very eye-opening. Not only is the storyline intriguing and well written but as you get into the book you start to see a second and third dimension to the storyline. This book is well worth the time sitting down and digesting the multi- dimensional levels of this compelling story.

It only takes two seconds to realize that this a reflection of how we function and even more frustratingly, how I function!Four gifts of a King has challenged my understanding of wealth, power, and prestige and has allowed me to see them in a new light as thing that are enslaving.

The field of nonlinear optics is actually much more general in scope than the name implies, and it finds large intersection with quantum mechanics, atomic physics and physical chemistry. It has applications in virtually all physical and life sciences. It's thus surprising that for such a useful and interesting subject, there would be such a shortage of good books! Fortunately, this book is excellent, and covers the subject thoroughly in both theory and application. An interesting feature of the book is that it covers the basic theory first from a classical perspective (i.e. nonlinear dipole polarization) and then rederives the basic results from semiclassical quantum theory. While the dielectric approach alone is adequate for solving problems (in fact, the quantum approach is useless in practice) the quantum background is fascinating to read and greatly helps in developing an intuitive picture of the physical mechanisms behind nonlinear processes. Boyd makes the nice choice of using Gaussian units, which is foreign to anybody but theoretical physics snobs but which eliminates a lot of useless notational complexity.Unfortunately, the book is sometimes terse and occasionally presents results without sufficient derivation, especially for advanced concepts and applications. However, when it comes to the foundational elements of nonlinear optics, the book is always thorough and the concepts well explained. Boyd clearly has a very deep understanding of the subject, and this shows in his writing.If you need to buy one book on nonlinear optics, this should probably be it. You might be temped to buy Shen or Bloembergen since they were such primary contributors to the field, but you will probably be disappointed in the quality of their exposition and confused by the notation.

We have to say that Professor Boyd has done a wonderful job on this book, since anyone from senior research scientists to first year graduate students all can refer to it.This book reminds me of Jackson's book on E &M in the sense that although you might not get `it' at that exact moment you can always count on it to show the correct way to tackle. All in all, if you are looking for a book on nonlinear optics this is the one you should have.
