Where the Heart Beats is a sometimes informative, soft-centered cultural history of the pre- and post-Fluxus period. It is crucially mistitled because its centerpiece, John Cage, works with his mind not his heart. He himself pridefully puts it that way many times in the volume. Nor is he a Zen master, as the author claims; Zen masters don't talk incessantly and insist on being in charge and react splenetically when their "music" is unappreciated. When Cage says Zen things, he is usually quoting or paraphrasing his teacher DT Suzuki. John Cage was an inventive composer, and influential in certain milieux. C'est tout.

The problem with writing about just one piece of who John was means you leave out all the reasons he created his art. Everything about him from his upbringing, personal life, spiritual journey to mental health was part of the musical pieces we all enjoy to this day. You cannot truly write about him without writing about everything.By the end of this book you discover John Cage and end with a much better understanding of each piece of music he created. You will feel like you actually know him. It is an amazing book, very well written and laid out.Very insightful.

Clearly written with just a bit of extraneous rmeandering this book had me "So maybe that's why I favor this direction rather than that in the art world..I never connected the two before or thought about connecting them." Of course I am a Californian and was familiar with the names, art, music, dance and Zen Center of San Fransico all of which I referred to and put into context for me. A definite buy whether you like John Cage's stuph or not, have an interest in the influence of Buddhism in the 20th century on American creativity.

I was deeply influenced by Cage, Harrison and others of that generation - my idols and elders. A good book for artists of any genre to inspire them them to go deep and create what is right for them, as John Cage did.

Such a beautiful book that captures the essence of Cage better than anything else I have read. This work has put an exclamation point at the end of a sentence that has run on in my subconscious for years. Not only does it give a candid look into Cage's life, but also gives a fascinating glimpse into post WWII art during an era where the United States had become a creative hot spot for European artists escaping potential life under the Nazi regime.

A slow, deep read, takes time and patience. I bought it for a recommended text for a multimedia, digital arts class.

I know some people who are treating this book as if it were the newest book of the Bible. Well, in fairness, it does contain some significant revelations, and it's a tale of good and evil. That's the good news.The bad news is that the book is (a) extremely disjointed and (b) full of extraneous information, some of it personal and some seemingly irrelevant. Thus, the book is longer than it should be, and the extraneous information muddles things up for no good reason. The basic story that Lewis tells is good; it's got good guys and not-so-good guys, financial chicanery and other things (sorry, no sex) that would be interesting on their own. And he certainly has a point - that our market system is rigged (a point with which I'm inclined to agree). But then he distracts us with lots of techno-jargon; the story of Goldman Sachs's role in prosecuting someone for stealing what seems to be public data that's of little use to him; and a weird discussion at the end about women bikers. (In fairness, the prosecution is not entirely irrelevant, but Lewis seems to be unsure whether to use it as a paradigm for Goldman's intrinsic evil or good, so it turns out to be unnecessary.)I've never been a big fan of Lewis; he's always struck me as being inordinately impressed with his own cleverness (not that he's not clever), and this book doesn't do anything to dispel my prejudices.Lastly, it's interesting (but another disappointment) that while Lewis praises his copy editor, I caught two rather obvious typos early on. I know he's a ragingly successful author, but really!

If you have been watching economic news this week, you will have heard that the British pound collapsed in a “flash crash.” Most news stories leave it at that. (I suspect that’s because they don’t know what a flash crash really is.) Put simply (and in Flash Boys Michael Lewis explains this recurring phenomenon quite simply) a flash crash is how high frequency traders use computers, multiple exchanges and time to abuse the rules. Now that I’ve summarized that, let me back up a second and deconstruct the sentence. First, what are the rules? In 2007, after brokers were found to have been abusing customers’ trust once too often, the government came out with what’s called Reg NMS. This regulation (and here I am just going to quote Michael Lewis directly because I don’t think I can say it any better than he did). Reg NMS mandated that brokers buy shares at the best price. “To define best price, Reg NMS relied on the concept of the National Best Bid and Offer. If an investor wished to buy 10,000 shares of Microsoft, and 100 shares were offered on the BATS exchange at $30 a share, while the full 10,000 listed on the other twelve exchanges were offered at $30.01, his broker was required to purchase the 100 shares at Bats before moving on to other exchanges.”This meant that anyone with a computer can see where a purchase is going to be made and for how much. So if you have a faster connection (and several exchanges where you can sell a few shares of a stock, you can already see how you can make money.) Sure, you won’t make a lot of money from any one trade. Maybe less than half a cent here and half a cent there. But that adds up. I know this from first-hand experience. The other day at work, I was trying to calculate what would the cost be of a service was excluded from a package of services. And my calculation kept being almost a billion off. I did it and re-did and re-did it every which way I could think of. I even pulled down my stats book to see if my math was off. Nothing. I got up and went for a cup of coffee just to take a break from this ridiculous problem and when I sat down again, I saw it. It was a rounding error. To be exact it was a rounding error in the one/thousandth decimal place. But I was dealing with billions of dollars and that rounding error made quite a difference. So yes, parts of pennies add up. But wait, there’s more.The way the best price is computed is when an exchange computes all the bids and offers on a particular stock. This computation is done by a government computer and if you know one thing about government, you will know that it takes years to upgrade computers. That means that if you have your own, faster computer you can “front-run” the official best price and sell and buy 100s of shares at the “real” best price. Sure it will be a “rounding error” but as I said before, those rounding errors matter. So a rule that was intended to create equity and transparency in the market in fact institutionalized inequality between the traders who had access to the super-fast computers and those who did not. Only the former would make money from these rounding errors.But wait, there is yet more. To make full use of Reg NMS you also need many different exchanges or dark pools and dark cables. And guess what, both exist. Dark cables are cables that are optimized for speed of transaction. Sure it’s a millisecond difference or even less but in that time you can get a lot of rounding errors. Dark pools are, in essence, proprietary exchanges. They exist to make it easier for institutional investors (like the folks to whom you entrust your pension and mortgage, for example) to trade in large blocks. So, for example if you have one million shares of Microsoft you want to sell (or buy) but don’t want your identity known, you would rather sell/buy those shares away from the glaring eye of the public transaction. Here’s the problem, if your are a high frequency trader, you (by definition) have a super-fast computer and access to dark cables. That means you can “ping” the many, many dark pools that have been set up. By some estimates, 40% of all trading is now done inside dark pools. And that in turn means you can know, well before the government-issued slow computers have finished calculating the best price what the real selling price is. That’s one heck of a rounding error in your pocket.And finally, to make all this work, you need volatility. All volatility means is that the price of something moves up and down a lot. And obviously if it does that, there is a lot more room for a high-frequency trader to essentially insert him/herself in the middle of that trade. Basically here’s the way it works. You want to buy those 10,000 shares of Microsoft for $30. There’s a dark pool that will sell 100 of them to you for that price. I, as a high-frequency trader, ping that dark pool, know what the price you’re willing to buy for is and all the other prices out there and where you will buy from next. So I go and buy the next batch of Microsoft shares that are selling (as you will recall at $30.01). Now, your broker, by law, has to come and buy the shares from me. Except I sell the shares now at $30.1001. And right there, in less than the blink of an eye I have made almost $10. And that’s from a mere 9,900 shares—a small trade. So what high-frequency traders do in effect is charge a tax for trading. And that tax (like most taxes) makes economic activity, in this case people’s willingness to trade to decrease. It also means that flash crashes, caused when a front-running computer algorithm gets too clever by half, are inevitable.In Flash Boys, Lewis explains all of this a little at a time. In some ways, the book reads like a great detective story. And like a great detective story, it is eminently readable because at its heart is a kind of hero: Brad Katsuyama. Brad sets out to hire a lot of computer programmers to beat the system. First he introduced Thor. This was a platform that enabled you to trade more slowly and then a brand new exchange called IEX (an exchange—and yes, it got the license to be an actual exchange) that did the same thing. The idea behind Thor and IEX seems counter-intuitive but in a high-frequency world it works. If you trade many thousands of shares per trade, then it makes sense that your order should arrive at all the exchanges/dark pools at the same time. That way no-one can ping/front-run you. You will not, in other words, be paying a tax on your trade. So to get the high-frequency traders out of the loop, you need to trade just slowly enough that your orders arrive at all exchanges at the same time.This is the story of how Brad and the motley crew he gathered around him came up with that idea, the push-back they initially got from the industry and how they eventually sold the industry, including Goldman Sachs, on the concept. It is a story well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

One of the things I enjoy about Lewis's writing is his ability to explain difficult and complicated subjects. This one on high speed stock trading was no exception. Even though I am in the financial services field, there are aspects of this topic that were totally mystifying. Glad to see I had a lot of company and glad to see steps are being taken to reduce the opportunity to pick your pocket when trading stocks. The techniques may be legal, but they are far from fair or ethical. I think this book is best suited for those with some background in finance or serious investors. An enjoyable read if your interest lies in this direction.

Well, maybe I don't love it. Maybe I like it. I am prejudiced. Michael Lewis is unmatched in being able to explain clearly some of the more complex machinations of the money markets. In this case, the issue is manipulation of the stock market by having better technology..and putting it close to trading floor. OK, I know that does not make much sense on the face of it, but read the book. But it is another way the large, programmatic traders can beat the little guy--and Lewis makes the point without it becoming a Message. The Canadians are heroes (and how often do you read that in a review of a Wall Street subject?) The market is generally unscrupulous. It is unlikely to be fixed (if it is 'fixable') so long as we don't understand it..and most of us do not. Michel Lewis is the guy who can explain everything.

I read all the reviews about this book before I purchased it. The reviewers who gave it low ratings due to the math or having to know prior scientific knowledge are correct. They are not lying. It helps to know the basics on metric conversions and knowing how to manipulate formulas.Most people hate math! I learned to respect it because math confirms everything, and math helps you to understand science better. I encourage you not to skip through the math without giving it a try. It will help you to understand the sky, your telescope, light waves and your lenses much better. The book is well explained for the novice, like myself, who has only the basic astronomy education of high school but wishes to go a bit further and deeper into the subject. Excellent if you are interested in aviation and space related travel. Gets a little technical in some aspects and raises more questions than it sometimes answers. That is a good thing, because you certainly can't contain all astronomical knowledge into one book; or even hundreds. It is a good positive step forward in a subject that is immensely fascinating.

I got assigned to teach an astronomy course when I had ZERO background in it. I had no textbook and had teach the concepts to myself before my students. This book is simple, breaks material down easily, good graphics, and correctly written, measurable clear objectives. Was invaluable to helping me learn and teach my course.

Excellent and orderly presentation of Astronomy that should be helpful to anyone who has been exposed to science and math at the High School level. The diagrams are very helpful and instructive. The book is actually written in Programmed Instruction format. That is, you are forced to be an active learner. The photographs and illustrations are very helpful and instructive!

At the beginning of each section there is a list of items that will be covered. At the end of each section there is a test. These two items take up more book space than any information shared. In addition, the kindle edition is ineffective because it is difficult to flip to the charts referred to in the chapters.

I was completely new to astronomy when I bought this book, and it taught me so much! The author explains things really well and in a very approachable, conversational way. As its title implies, it's geared towards someone who's teaching themselves without benefit of an instructor, and I think it does a great job of this; just wish it was published with color images. Overall, though, I highly recommend this book.

Love this book. It was easy to use. Things were easy to find. Plus it was written to the point where anyone can read and comprehend. It was way cheaper compare to what the textbook store on my college campus was asking for!!! Id recommend this book if it's a requirement for your astronomy class.

Great guide with routes of all abilities. I actually read this from front to back because it was so interesting. It was very inspiring and makes me want to climb other routes all over Alaska other than just the West Buttress on Denali. I have climbed for 33 years in the Lower 48, but have only vacationed in Alaska so far. The routes are rated with the time needed, black & white photos, map of the areas given, and a history of the first ascent is given. Excellent and highly recommended.

I am a 21 year old woman so maybe that's why I related to that book more than this one. Overall, it is a good book, but I expected more out of it.

My daughter loves to read and has enjoyed other Pinkalicious books. I guess I just expected more from this - it's a cute story but it's not great. I like Thanksgiving books that are more about why we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Another excellent Pinkalicious book. I would highly reccomend it. We love the stickers that came with the book along with another fun poster. The illustrations are beautiful and we love all of the colorful images. The story is fun to follow and easy to read for young children.
