Review
“Heroic… fascinating.” --New York Times“Inspirational… exuberant.” --Los Angeles Times"Revelatory… Where the Heart Beats may not just be the best book written yet about John Cage; it’s probably also one of the most substantive-yet-readable entryways into the nexus of 20th-century American art and the immortal qualities of Eastern thought… one of the most profound, not to mention unexpected, gifts imaginable."--Slate"Absorbing… no future commentator on Cage's work or influence will be able to ignore Larson's contribution…a milestone in contemporary cultural criticism." --San Francisco Chronicle"Remarkable… without a doubt the richest, most stimulating, most absorbing book I’ve read in the past year, if not decade — remarkably researched, exquisitely written, weaving together a great many threads of cultural history into a holistic understanding of both Cage as an artist and Zen as a lens on existence… Not unlike Cage’s music, Where the Heart Beats: John Cage, Zen Buddhism, and the Inner Life of Artists is impossible to distill, to synthesize, to relay. Rather, its goodness is best experienced in full, with complete surrender. "--Brain Pickings"Strange and wonderful... a gloriously rich reading experience, studded with layers upon layers of deeply inspiring and endlessly fascinating paths. One of the best books of the year in any category." --NPR.org (A Favorie Music Book of the Year)

Kay Larson delivers a fascinating story portraying Cage's creative process, connecting us to his heart and mind as she paints a colorful portrait with her elegant writing style. This breathtaking story weaves together threads of cultural history as it conveys the tremendous changes sweeping through American Culture following World War II. A time when the Arts in America let go of tradition as they reinvented themselves. Painters, Dancers, Performance Artists, and Poets changed styles. In addition, a tumultuous period when composers began to touch thousands of lives through a spiritual quest. "WHERE THE HEART BEATS" is refreshing, enjoyable, beautifully written, and Highly Recommended.
Where the Heart Beats is a sometimes informative, soft-centered cultural history of the pre- and post-Fluxus period. It is crucially mistitled because its centerpiece, John Cage, works with his mind not his heart. He himself pridefully puts it that way many times in the volume. Nor is he a Zen master, as the author claims; Zen masters don't talk incessantly and insist on being in charge and react splenetically when their "music" is unappreciated. When Cage says Zen things, he is usually quoting or paraphrasing his teacher DT Suzuki. John Cage was an inventive composer, and influential in certain milieux. C'est tout.
Finally someone took the time and research to write about the full life JOhn Cage had. Not just to focus on one thing about him. The problem with writing about just one piece of who John was means you leave out all the reasons he created his art. Everything about him from his upbringing, personal life, spiritual journey to mental health was part of the musical pieces we all enjoy to this day. You cannot truly write about him without writing about everything.By the end of this book you discover John Cage and end with a much better understanding of each piece of music he created. You will feel like you actually know him. It is an amazing book, very well written and laid out.Very insightful.
If you ever wondered why the three items in the subtitle relate, wonder no more. Rather be curious enough to delve into it more deeply. Clearly written with just a bit of extraneous rmeandering this book had me "So maybe that's why I favor this direction rather than that in the art world..I never connected the two before or thought about connecting them." Of course I am a Californian and was familiar with the names, art, music, dance and Zen Center of San Fransico all of which I referred to and put into context for me. A definite buy whether you like John Cage's stuph or not, have an interest in the influence of Buddhism in the 20th century on American creativity.
Experimental composer/artist John Cage, creaive avatar of silence as music, is the kind of authentic ultra-genius you might encounter once in a lifetime. Kay Larson's meticulously researched biography explores the influence Zen Buddhism had on his ultimate break-throughs on the path to arriving at his true essence.
Amazing book about John Cage and his musical, spiritual growth. I keep re-reading chapters; Kay Larson has such a good understanding of Cage, and that historical period of musical, artistic exploration. I was deeply influenced by Cage, Harrison and others of that generation - my idols and elders. A good book for artists of any genre to inspire them them to go deep and create what is right for them, as John Cage did.
Such a beautiful book that captures the essence of Cage better than anything else I have read. This work has put an exclamation point at the end of a sentence that has run on in my subconscious for years. Not only does it give a candid look into Cage's life, but also gives a fascinating glimpse into post WWII art during an era where the United States had become a creative hot spot for European artists escaping potential life under the Nazi regime.
A slow, deep read, takes time and patience. I bought it for a recommended text for a multimedia, digital arts class.
He was definitely a unique free spirit.Amazing research and detail.
