I look forward to each Jim Korkis book, whether about Disneyland, Walt Disney, or other numerous Disney-rated subjects. I've been a Disneyland fan for years and I'm always hoping for yet another "Secrets of" Disneyland, in spite of how much Jim Korkis has previously shared in his books. While some of the stories have been told at least in part elsewhere before, this volume adds depth and new information and is very readable.
Well, Jim Korkis has done it again. Jim seems to have a inexhaustible source of Disney Secrets and Trivia. This book gives Disneyland fans more of what they want- the stories behind the attractions and lands.A few highlights: You know those little figures that are acting like they are cranking the popcorn machines? There's a Yeti, a clown, etc? Those guys are called "Roastie Toasties" and have been around since the 1800s', they were popular at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Who knew? Well, besides Jim, of course. He also tells all about the popcorn wagons, but not why Disneyland popcorns is so darn good.We all like Big Thunder Mountain, right? Yes, I miss the Mine train, but it was getting kinda dated. Anyway, almost all of that heavy iron stuff around is real honest to goodness old mining equipment, including a real stamping mill and a 1200# cogwheel. The story of Herb Rymans fantastic concept art (like that of New Orleans Square) is told in detail.There's a history of Pixie Hollow, plus it's predecessor, Tritons Garden. When they aren't doing the meet and greets back there, spend a little time just to look around at all the little details. It is a phantasmagorical place.The Big wet rotating ball in Tommorrowland? The one kids love but adults are a little scared of? That's called a Kugel ball, and you will never guess how much it weighs.And remember, according to Walt, there are only two "Misters" In Disneyland- Mr. Toad & Mr. Lincoln.
