The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek: A Novel, by Kim Michele Richardson

Review

"Richardson's latest work is a hauntingly atmospheric love letter to the first mobile library in Kentucky and the fierce, brave packhorse librarians who wove their way from shack to shack dispensing literacy, hope, and - just as importantly - a compassionate human connection. Richardson's rendering of stark poverty against the ferocity of the human spirit is irresistible. Add to this the history of the unique and oppressed blue-skinned people of Kentucky, and you've got an un-put-downable work that holds real cultural significance." - Sara Gruen, author of Water for Elephants"This is Richardson's finest, as beautiful and honest as it is fierce and heart-wrenching, THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK explores the fascinating and unique blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave Packhorse librarians. A timeless and significant tale about poverty, intolerance and how books can bring hope and light to even the darkest pocket of history." - Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of Liar Temptress Soldier Spy"Emotionally resonant and unforgettable, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a lush love letter to the redemptive power of books. It is by far my favorite KMR book-and I am her huge fan. Cussy Mary is an indomitable and valiant heroine, and through her true-blue eyes, 1930s Kentucky comes to vivid and often harrowing life. Richardson's dialogue is note-perfect; Cussy Mary's voice is still ringing in my head, and the sometimes dark story she tells highlights such gorgeous, glowing grace notes that I was often moved to hopeful tears. " - Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Almost Sisters"Kim Michele Richardson has written a fascinating novel about people almost forgotten by history: Kentucky's pack-horse librarians and "blue people." The factual information alone would make this book a treasure, but with her impressive storytelling and empathy, Richardson gives us so much more." - Ron Rash, New York Times bestselling author of One Foot in Eden and Serena"A rare literary adventure that casts librarians as heroes, smart tough women on horseback in rough terrain doing the brave and hard work of getting the right book into the right hands. Richardson has weaved an inspiring tale about the power of literature." - Alexander Chee, author of Edinburgh and Queen of the Night"With a focus on the personal joy and broadened horizons that can result from access to reading material, this well-researched tale serves as a solid history lesson on 1930s Kentucky. A unique story about Appalachia and the healing power of the written word. " - Kirkus Reviews"This gem of a historical from Richardson (The Sisters of Glass Ferry) features an indomitable heroine navigating a community steeped in racial intolerance. In 1936, 19-year-old Cussy Mary Carter works for the New Deal–funded Pack Horse Library Project, delivering reading material to the rural people of Kentucky...Readers will adore the memorable Cussy and appreciate Richardson's fine rendering of rural Kentucky life." - Publishers Weekly

In Patagonia, by Bruce Chatwin

Amazon.com Review

Fascinated by Patagonia since an early childhood lust for Grandma's scrap of hairy Giant Sloth skin, Chatwin's also intrigued by odd miners and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy in Cholila. In 1977 the London Observer called it "a brilliant travel book," and while Chatwin's no longer alive (he died in 1989), his book still glows. From Rio Negro to the southernmost town of Ushuaia, Chatwin depicts all in writing as spare as the Patagonian desert itself, and as vibrant as the purple clouds off Last Hope Sound.

When Bruce Chatwin’s classic and offbeat travel narrative “In Patagonia” first appeared in 1977, many readers didn’t know what to think of it. Its publication coincided with my sophomore year at seminary and—boggled down with theological tomes and a recently acquired fondness for the works of John D. MacDonald--I missed the event altogether. It was to be forty years before one of my children (they are all avid readers, God bless ‘em!) brought the book to my attention. Chatwin had been working with the (London) Sunday Times Magazine when an interview with the elderly architect Eileen Gray inspired him to see the varied and desolate area that lies at the southernmost tip of South America. The rumor (not exactly true) is that Chatwin left a note for his employer that read simply, “Have gone to Patagonia.”Gone to Patagonia! How often have we on a day-dreamy kind of afternoon wanted to make the same journey? Patagonia is a region whose struggles and eccentricities are richly woven into the historical fabric of the South American continent. In modern times, Patagonia has been the refuge of scoundrels, outlaws, misfits of all kinds and individuals orphaned by time or by fate.Nicholas Shakespeare’s introduction to the book is excellent and the book itself is one you will never forget. I read it this time for pleasure but will read it again someday to unravel some of its mysteries. There are too many names and dates and places to absorb on a first encounter with “In Patagonia.”If you haven’t read it—do yourself a favor. Put aside that book that is boring you and read about this place called Patagonia which lies at the very ends of the Earth.Reminiscent of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” and William Least-Heat Moon’s “Blue Highways,” Chatwin’s “In Patagonia” will grip you and never let you go.

One of the greatest travel books of all time. While not specifically a 'Rick Steves' guide to Patagonia, it is more like "On the Road." Meant to be a very personal account of his travels, and his knowledge of this strange part of the world. It has been proven since it's publication to be full of fictional or not properly recreated stories, but regardless, you will never forget this book. Still a classic after nearly forty years. Chatwin's writing is almost dreamlike at times, and others, when he slides back into a story of Darwin, or rounding the Cape in a square rigger a hundred years before, is incredible. If you are a writer or wanting to be one, you could do worse than read this book simply for the astonishingly beautiful passages. It is on my bookshelf next to Herodotus and the diaries of Marco Polo.

Extraordinary account of the Bruce Chatwin's travels through the Patagonian steppe to Tierra del Fuego. Infused with historical stories that provide a backdrop for the lands he visits, the story here is remarkable. An artifact belonging to his family provides the gravity that pulls him to the southern reaches of South America. He realizes from the beginning the artifact is likely apocryphal, but that becomes an essential element to the story as it lends a fantastical air to the voyage, as if he's visiting some storybook land. You have to remind yourself as you're reading this that it is a very real, but very exotic, place.During the course of reading this, it struck me that Chatwin spends little time describing the physical surroundings, which is odd considering this is known to be a region of breathtaking, albeit stark, beauty. When contrasted with his careful depictions of the people, it dawned on me the essence of Patagonia that he conveys here is the hardscrabble people who have come here looking for a better life and found backbreaking toil and harsh conditions. A couple of generations of that produces a distinctive populace and you then realize, for all it's beauty, Patagonia is less a place than a mentality. Fiercely independent, weathered and cragged could be used interchangeably to describe the place or the people.

Most of us in North America think of Patagonia as a barren place, and much of it is, but the human stories here are amazing: author notes that seemingly everyone he ran into had a tale. As as Chatwin backtracks his own ancestry (opening and closing with the fascinating story of nearly-fresh skin of the ancient ground sloth Mylodon) he fits in lore about everything from Welsh and English immigrants clinging to scraps of their old lives, to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Butch was fairly similar to his movie incarnation, Sundance not at all), to people who are either forgotten royalty or claim to be, and so on. Even the empty places of Patagonia have fascinating details provided here. Just a great book that's as amazing as its reputation.

I read this book after having been to Argentina. It puts the people and landscape into perspective. Chatwin was a master storyteller who provided rich descriptions of the lives and scenery of one of the most interesting places in the world. He also provided information about all of the out of the way places and sights that people miss when visiting a country. This book should be on the "must read" list for all armchair and actual travelers.

I read this as we were touting Patagonia and was happy I had witnessed some of the landscapes Chatwin had described. Also, we had the opportunity to meet some rugged individualists who hearken to some of the characters Chatwin encounters. What was amazing is that Chatwin was traveling more than forty years ago when the wilds of Patagonia were even wilder. Loved how he wove the tale of Butch Cassidy throughout. The author was himself quite the adventurer. Fascinating tales.

It's a product of its time. That's not good or bad. Chatwin writes almost exclusively of white Europeans who live or have lived in Patagonia. It was what he was interested in. But if you want a more inclusive look at the people who live in the region---and there are plenty of stories out there--this book should be supplemented by another. Possibly translated from Spanish?

Amazon.com Review

Featured Recipe from Paleo Cooking from Elana's Pantry: Breakfast Sausage I’ve modified Alton Brown’s recipe for classic breakfast sausage by increasing the sage and removing the refined sugar. For sausage with a milder flavor, reduce the amount of sage to 1 tablespoon. These sausages are perfect served with the Green Frittata (page 80) and Salsa Verde (page 89). Makes 8 patties Ingredients 1 1/2 pounds organic ground pork or turkey 2 tablespoons minced fresh sage 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary 1 tablespoon honey 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon olive oil Directions In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, sage, rosemary, honey, salt, and pepper, using your hands to mix the ingredients thoroughly. Using a 1/3-cup measuring cup, form the mixture into 8 patties, each about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the patties, turning them once and gently pressing them down to flatten, for 5 to 8 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Transfer the patties to a paper towel–lined plate and serve. Featured Recipe from Paleo Cooking from Elana's Pantry: Flourless Nut-Free Brownies Makes 16 brownies Ingredients 1 cup dark chocolate chips 1/4 cup Spectrum all-vegetable shortening 1 cup coconut sugar 4 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Directions Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch square baking dish with shortening. In a medium saucepan over very low heat, melt the chocolate chips until smooth. Remove the pan from the heat, then mix in the shortening and coconut sugar. Stir in the eggs and vanilla extract until thoroughly combined. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the brownies comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached. Let the brownies cool in the baking dish for 1 hour. Cut into 16 squares and serve. Featured Recipe from Paleo Cooking from Elana's Pantry: Sesame Noodles Serves 4 Ingredients 1 (12-ounce) package kelp noodles 1/4 cup roasted almond butter, at room temperature 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil 1 tablespoon ume plum vinegar 1 tablespoon honey Sesame seeds, for garnish Directions Soak the kelp noodles in a bowl of hot water for 30 minutes. Drain the noodles and rinse thoroughly. In a small bowl, whisk together the almond butter, sesame oil, vinegar, and honey. Add the noodles and toss to combine. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve.

Food blogger Amsterdam's latest cookbook is aimed firmly at the growing Paleo diet market, noting that "a plant-based diet with small amounts of lean animal protein feel less inflated and more energetic." There is a wealth of options for those looking to eliminate gluten, diary, and grains—but be forewarned she also avoids tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. Nevertheless the recipes are worth a try. She uses a great deal of coconut in various forms: coconut flour in Apricot Muffins, coconut oil in Paleo "Potato" Leek Soup—cauliflower replaces the potato, and coconut milk in a diary-free whipped cream. For those less keen on coconut, Amsterdam's Honey Lemon Chicken and Avocado Kale Salad will surely please. Unfortunately, all the recipes feel limited by the diet's strict protocols, so only the most restrictive eaters will find the bite worth the buy. (June)

Elana Amsterdam delivers another excellent and helpful cookbook for those who suffer from different allergies. In the past, I have tried her recipes offered from her website, and from her fantastic book she published in 2009, 'The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook.' My daughter and I suffer from different allergies, and found her delicious recipes to help enhance better health. There are approximately 100 mouth-watering recipes in this amazing cookbook that are family favorites, passed down from one generation to another. Every recipe is simple, easy-to-prepare with directions included, followed by colorful, stunning illustrations of prepared dishes. The author includes recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinners, sides and desserts. In addition, the sweet treats are a bonus, and there are plenty to choose from. The Paleo Diet is safe, gluten-free, dairy-free, and grain free. My daughter can tolerate dairy products, but I can't, so this cookbook is perfect for my health issues. The Paleo Diet highlights seafood, meat, vegetables, fruits and more. This cookbook also gives the number of servings per recipe, and her classic old-time favorites are incredible in taste. Each recipe also contains only a few ingredients to make life easy for the busy cook. We have made the Breakfast Sausage, which we both love as breakfast is my favorite meal. Her desserts are a sensation, including the Nut-Free Brownies, but there is so much more this book has to offer. An Update: I made the BLUEBERRY COFFEE CAKE twice, and it is indeed delicious. Also, I made the BANANA BREAD, very tasty. Tomorrow, we are going to make the CHICKEN SALAD as this sounds delightful and refreshing, and it's perfect for us in this AZ summer heat, which we appreciate dishes that are not to heavy. In conclusion thus far, the more we choose these recipes, the more we realize how fascinating this cookbook is. We thank the author for this wonderful addition to my collection of cookbooks, and I will leave updates with new recipes we try. Extremely useful, inspiring, and very helpful for those who suffer from allergies. Highly recommended!

Before I purchased this book, I read all the other reviews about it. I learned to do this after being unhappy with several purchases and finding out gee, other people warned me right there in the reviews! I'm also one of those reviewers who is not afraid to say what's wrong with a book (exaggerated number of recipes) or to say that it's really best for beginners to a lifestyle (or not). I understand how frustrating it is to leave a less than positive review and to then feel like 'fans and friends' are voting your review not helpful just because they don't like that you didn't fawn....having said that, I think just the fact that this book is so simple and uncomplicated is why it is perfect for newbies.I've been a follower of Elana's blog for awhile now, and I purchased another of her low carb books (savory) last year. Another reviewer stated they felt this book was best for beginners to Paleo because it has a lot of simple recipes, and I would definitely recommend this as a book for a newbie to have. Everything in it is pretty straightforward and there isn't anything complicated; but on that same note I found the delicious simplicity of the recipes to be worth it. Chicken Marbella (p. 68) is worth the whole price of the book alone; it was the first recipe I made (never touched a green olive before!) and my husband almost *moaned* when he took a bite of it. Sure, 'mustard and salmon' is almost cringingly basic for more advanced cooks but I think the book strives to make something for everyone. The recipes are unfailingly comprised of fresh ingredients, minimal prep time and cooking effort, for a big flavor payoff. For the experience of the color photos, and the feel of the book, I found the price to be very worth it. I honestly would not have enjoyed this book as much had it been an e-book.If you are far into the Paleo/low carb style journey you might find most of it to be rather like 'recipe review', but really I think this is a good book with tasty, simple recipes that don't require much thought or effort. The flavor profiles are very balanced, and I haven't had to tweak any seasonings or spices at all. THIS is almost unheard of in my kitchen! I prefer big brassy flavor in my food (rather than salt) so that it's an experience; these recipes are truly tasty just as written.Note on the Chicken Marbella : I used a 10 lb. bag of chicken quarters, doubled the marinade recipe, and baked it in a giant cake sheet for 1:20 at 350. We had several meals' worth of food with just a 'dump and bake' effort, and it tastes like something you'd get at a restaurant. I could have served this whole beautifully-browned pan of goodness to company and they would have felt as though they were getting high-dollar fare! The entire 10 lb. chicken meal was under $10.00, too.

Elena Amsterdam is one of my favorite cookbook authors. I have all of her published cookbooks and use them almost daily. This one is great. I eat low carb and use the recipes in that way and they are always delicious. Most use easy to find in my local market simple ingredients. Not all of her recipes are 100 percent low carb but with almost all of them I can substitute 1 ingredient and make them low carb. She uses honey and agave nectar as sweeteners in her recipes and since I do not use those I found some sugar free syrup made from Stevia and use that instead. It works great. I highly recommend her cookbooks and her website for gluten free, paleo and low carb diet followers.

This is an excellent cookbook for GF and paleo. I've bought it several times for gifts, and have the hard copy and the kindle copy for myself. Dont want to go somewhere and not have access to GF basic recipes. All of her cookbooks are wonderful.

Love Elana's blog, love her cookbooks, it's great if you want to eat paleo, gluten-free, or just healthier. And the recipes are so SIMPLE and easy AND YUMMY. Love that. Tried the bagels and they came out great.

I'm not a paleo newbie but I still find this book to be super helpful and very well done. I have a stack of paleo cookbooks and recipes bookmarked. Sometimes those recipes turn out well and sometimes they really don't, especially the baked goods.Elana's book and her website recipes always turn out well. They've clearly been tested and re-tested and everything is solid. I've been making paleo pancakes from all types of websites and books for years and my kids are never "fooled". I made the paleo pancake recipe in Elana's book and my kids asked me why we weren't eating paleo anymore. They are great and an excellent stand in for the "real" kind. This is a great resource, I highly recommend.

Oh, my heart! In Lament by Lynsey M. Stewart, the author brings us the story of Alexander and Nat, two people who have suffered unimaginable loss. Grief can take many forms, and the way it’s dealt with is equally varied. While Nat battled her grief by immersing herself in dance, Alexander, a talented cellist, has struggled to remain anything but closed off and cold. This couple, and the supporting cast in their story, capture your heart and mind in a way that happens rarely for me. The reader is swept along on their journey to healing, and finding life and love again. Ms. Stewart flawlessly handles the delicate balance of sorrow and happiness, and brings us an emotionally stunning read. Lament is simply an amazing second-chance romance, a must read!DeeWords that Sparkle

This is my first Lynsey M. Stewart and I am completely blown away. I have to go read everything she has written immediately, while kicking myself for not doing so earlier.Nat is a dancer who has struggled with grief for years. She first sees Alex at a concert where he is playing the cello, and the piece goes straight to her heart. She can't stop thinking about what Alex must be going through to be able to play such sad music from so deep within. When she moves back home, she comes face-to-face with Alex, who is also living in the small town with his young daughter and they both feel an instant connection.I highlighted so many passages in this book that were just so beautiful, it was like reading poetry. I don't want to give too much away because everyone needs to experience this book in their own way, but I want to share just a few quotes that made my breath hitch."Death is the end of a journey you didn't choose to go on in the first place.""Grief is like trying to paint a sunset when all you have is black paint.""I'd been dead inside for so long. It was like I was witnessing the first dawn, the astounding peek of vivid pinks and bright purples behind dark clouds."It really is the story of two people learning to live again while trying to get through their grief the best way they can. It is haunting and raw and real. It is beautiful and healing. And even through all of this, it is funny, heart-warming, and really freakin' hot.Lament is probably my top read of the year so far and I would give it more than five stars if I could."Love is a symptom of loss. But love is also a symptom of life."

I am destroyed. I don't think I have ever felt the pain, love or anguish of the characters in any story like I did in this. When Nat was 16 she was the sole survivor of a car crash that took her mother and younger sister. When she was 17 she left her hometown and never looked back - until now. After many years away, she is heading back to take over the dance studio that her grandmother runs. To Nat, dance is everything. It helps her work through the pain of loss as she loses herself in the music. Alex is a famous cellist who lost his wife to cancer and has the most adorable daughter. A chance meeting between Nat and Elise (Eli) shows Nat that Eli has potential and urges her to come to dance. Nat recognizes the grief that Eli is feeling, she had been there too. There is an instant connection between Alex and Nat, but Alex is not yet over his grief and guilt that he should be happy again. This is such a beautifully written story, with a gentleness that warms the heart but a slight kink in the intimate moments make you realize you can't judge a person by their straitlaced appearance. Every book I read by Ms. Stewart just gets better and better and I'm seriously worried about my heart with every future novel. This book is MUST.

Lament is one of those stories that you never see coming, and that will try to bring you to your knees. I've read the amazing Lynsey M. Stewart in the past, and love her writing style, but she's seriously hit new levels with this story. Now, I'm not going to give much of a description as I really don't want to take away the absolute beauty of going in blind. So how does a person overcome grief?! It varies from person to person, with not any way wrong, and Nat's way is to dance her way through, while Alex pours his into music. Fate has them meeting at a train station as they hail a cab, and the journey takes off from there. And it took me on an emotional journey that I'm still trying to get over, but see, I'm not sure it's possible. I believe that this is one of those stories that will stay with me forever, you know those kind right?! The ones where the MCs are tattooed on the heart, and it's like they become your friends, and that's what Ms. Stewart did here, as she wrote it so realistically that Nat & Alex became my friends, and their every moment of pain became mine, but so did every other emotion as well. Anyway, this is one of those powerful stories that you don't want to miss, and I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Wow.Just...wow.I started reading this author shortly after her debut novel. With every new piece she writes, her growth as an author amazes me. With this one though, her refined talent is clearly visible with each word, each character, each event, from the very beginning to the very end.The story of Nat and Alex is a difficult journey, at no point ever easy going and care free. Their losses traumatic, their souls grieving, and finding the strength to carry on brings together a beautifully scripted story that will have you in tears. I guarantee it. It’s pure poetry on each and every page inside this book. I was captivated, moved, spell bound, and utterly in love with every word.Sometimes, you need a raw, emotionally charged book to break up the pattern of a typical contemporary romance novel, and that, is exactly what Lament will do for you. It’s so unique, and deserves all the accolades for being so masterfully brought to life. This is one that deserves aaaallll the stars, and has easily become my favorite of 2019 this far!KelKel and Mel Tell
