While preparing for my Math Praxis I found the Mometrix videos on youtube and loved them. They really walked you through the steps to solve problems. So I wanted to buy this book thinking it would help even more. I was very disappointed - the problems are difficult and the explanations to solve the problems are not as detailed as the videos so I was left wondering how did they get the answers and having to do more research online. Which I shouldn't have for the cost of this book. Don't buy.

Rating: 5/5I purchased this product for Praxis Core test prep. Initially, I was drawn to it because of the affordable price. Now that I've been able to take a closer look, it is packed with practical test taking tips and practice problems w/ solutions & explanations. I was pleased to see that it covers all three components of the core exam and a practice test to take once I work through all the study material.

I have purchased 4 study books to start preparation for this exam and so far I like this one the most. The fact that it isn't 300 pages long is great because it's not too intimidating but I also feel like it includes more pertinent information than the others do. I also think that it is great that so many extras are available with this book and I have been really impressed with the Mofmetrix's customer service. As someone who has been stressing about preparing for this exam, this book is truly appreciated.

This book is great because it focuses on what concept you need to know instead of trying to cram facts. Well written, extra links included with book and includes study tips throughout which are very helpful. I passed the Praxis Core for educators on my try using this book (to study).

This text isn’t too big, the other praxis core textbooks or extremely big, so it’s makes it look intimidating to read. Also at the end of all three sections that have practice tests to quiz yourself. As someone who was born and raised in Boston, it’s been a mind-boggling & bittersweet past 15 years or so- so much of this city has changed, much of it to the point of it becoming unrecognizable. All of the places I used to hang out at in my “wasted youth” are either “new & improved” or just straight up GONE. Kenmore Square, for instance. GONE.So when my husband showed me the “Dirty Old Boston” Facebook page (I don’t ascribe to social media- yeah, I’m old school lol) I was overjoyed! I’m not old enough to remember a lot of the places in the much older photos, but many of the pics from the late ‘70s on brought back so many memories- big, small, long drawn out & “snapshot”- it was like a flood in my mind (in an awesome way, if that makes any sense...)Boston is such an interesting, storied, historical (officially as well as colloquially) place that I feel doesn’t really get the personal recollection it deserves- because it really is such a pivotal place in the history of the US, that type of historical relation tends to be the focus most of the time (I’m talking Paul Revere, the “tea party”, et al). But Boston has such an amazing history in many other respects. Music, architecture, DIVE BARS! Much of these aspects have been, if not demolished or erased, then SEVERELY ALTERED. Disrespect to the highest degree, IMO.This amazing book, much like the amazing FB page, is a must have for anyone- whether you’re from here or just like it here, I think you’ll get immense enjoyment from it- over and over again! I don’t personally know the author, but I gotta say, I can feel the love (not to mention he knows his stuff!) This man really did his homework and this is such a beautiful fruition! I really love it & if you love Boston, I KNOW you’ll love it too! Get it, it’s so worth it & then some!

This is a really great book if you grew up around here....you'd enjoy it anyway, but when you remember the old days when the Combat Zone was the Combat Zone and the Orange line was still the El, it really takes you down memory lane. I was proud to make the final cut, and am in a photo in the 80's section of me and GG Allin. If you are a GG fan, it's before he got so whacked, and looks all normal.....Anyway, as I was getting ready to leave my sister's on Christmas day, I saw my Dad pouring over the copy I gave him for Christmas and he looked like he was really enjoying it! Jimmy Botticelli did a great job of putting the book together. Thanks Jimmy!

My 77 year old father has been in the hospital the last few weeks. I bought him this book to help him keep occupied but also to help his memory. This book has been a lifesaver, literally. He's spent hours looking through the pictures of his childhood and remembering landmarks and stories. It's helped him heal in so many ways and helped us connect more as well. I'm hearing stories I've never heard before and his memory and mind are working as good as ever. This is such a great piece of Boston's history. Thank you for putting this book together. Dirty Old Boston is a wonderful photographic tribute to the Boston of my youth. It captures the gritty, working class city during the post-war years until the late 1980's, when the city began to transform into the more modern place that it is today. Anyone who lived in Boston before the 1980's, especially, will appreciate the memories of places now long forgotten and the faded headlines that were sometimes associated with them. Dirty Old Boston is a family album for all of us who remember the Boston of days now long gone by, but not yet lost in the mists of personal memories.

It's a WONDERFUL book and I've been waiting to get it. I'm very pleased as is my husband ....great book ...fast service and packaged VERY well.

Fantastic introduction to machine learning in Python. The examples are well written, and do a very nice job of introducing both the implementation and the concept for each model. I'm halfway thru the book, and am really enjoying it.I have a background in math and wrote software professionally for a number of years, but haven't spent much time doing either for the past 5-10 years. This book is technical enough to keep me interested, and accessible enough to allow me to ramp up on the language and the scikit framework.An added bonus - the instructions actually allowed me to set up my development environment, and the code in the book actually runs!100% recommend for someone looking to get started in ML with Python.

This book walks thru a TON of ML algorithms and applications with example code but the code is so succinct that it's not really a programming book as much as a crash course in some ML math libraries available for Python, what the algorithms do and when to use them. It doesn't get into the math but it does give clear examples and explanations of when to use each algorithm and how. It's all terribly practical and understandable. I'm a fan. Also btw I'm a computer programmer and ML novice... I'm not used to reading Python but it's simple enough if you know other languages.

The book is printed in black-and-white making it *really* hard to understand which classes / data points the authors are referring to.Nevertheless, this is a good intro book and a nice companion to online classes that do not provide written notes.

This is a great book, and I'd say it is even great for those that are not familiar with python (you just obviously won't be able to run the code). For anyone with some basic understanding of linear algebra/statistics, the authors are able to present to you all the important (and sometimes subtle but significant) details, without the usage of equations, and more importantly, how they all relate to one another.All the concepts mentioned here are heavily backed with well thought of and well presented figures, in such a way that again I'd suggest you don't even need python to understand. If you do know python, loading the data sets and reproducing the figures is just a few lines of easy to understand code away (with the exception of the mglearn library includes which does some "plotting magic" for you. However, I believe each of them were appropriate. You can ignore them and make the plots in your own way, or just print the variables, it just may not look as publication friendly).Normally, I hesitate purchasing books that claim they may explain algorithms without the need of equations, and I expect them rather to be cook books of lightly and disjointly explained techniques (like an encyclopedia). However, I do not think such is true of this book. The power of scikit-learn is demonstrated and the algorithms behind them explained intuitively, and are referred as to how they fit together and complement each other.As with any introductory read, a supplement is needed from time to time and the authors' reference to Elements of Statistical Learning is a useful one (equation heavy). There are points in the book where the author defers to elements of statistical learning. I found these points suitable since further explanation would be out of scope.I read this book on my free time while on vacation, and much of the time I didn't have access to a computer. The concepts were so well presented that it was just a nice leisurely read. When I finally had time to access a computer, I was able to try the techniques on my data sets with some browsing back and forth through the book again, but otherwise with little effort.Finally, since I myself am a researcher, I would recommend this book to any other researcher willing to start delving into the world of machine learning. Further reading will always be necessary, but this book will give you such a good intuitive understanding and overview of the subject matter that you'll know what to do to proceed next, and how to do it without running in circles. Even better, you'll likely already have applied it to your research!

About the Author

Marius Boirayon is the son of the World War II central France maquis (resistance) leader, and grew up in Mount Hagen in the Papua New Guinea Highlands. Following a career in the Royal Australian Air Force and as an aircraft/helicopter engineer working in outback Australia, he decided in 1995 to go to the Solomon Islands to live. After wanting to read this book for so long,I was happy to finally find a copy at a reasonable price.Now I'm sorry I wasted my money.As a work of fiction it might be more acceptable,but still poorly organized and all over the place. One minute the author is talking about underground bases, ufo's, uso's, aliens,and flying lizard men ; while the next minute he's going on and on about 20 to 24 foot smelly,hairy ,horny ,cannibalistic giants,who have been residing and strutting about the Solomon Islands,for centuries. Into this whole mix is thrown the one world government conspiracy,aliens creating crypto-critters,and various other paranoia, mixed in with political over tones.The book contains 2 maps,one photo and one drawing. You'd think that in a book such as this (310 pages) ; there would at least be some kind of photos of these places he is speaking of,or some kind of sketches of these creatures. Since the natives of these islands have been tormented by these beings for centuries ,and they are reputed to just walk around out in the open; someone at sometime must have photographed or at least sketched what they saw. Not to mention the Solomon Island ufo's,which according to the author are seen even more frequently than the giants. Certainly someone was capable of sketching what they saw,even if they didn't have a camera on hand.

This book could have been very, very good if the author had included the maps he has on his website and some photos of the villages and areas he talks about. I shouldn't have to go to his website to see a chart of the giant and UFO locations.I agree with others that the book peters off at the end when he gets into the global conspiracies and local politics. I understand why he included it (it was to explain why these creatures and phenomenon are being ignored), but it should have been left out. It detracts from the main theme of the book. Dealing with just the giants and UFOs would have sufficed.Unlike some, I liked the stories handed down by the locals concerning these strange and oftentimes malevolent creatures. Their folklore is important to understanding their relationship with these beings.All in all, this is a very enlightening book on a little known area of the world that boasts contact with extremely large beings and aliens..

This book makes sensational claims about UFO activity, fantastic oil and gem discoveries and cannibalistic giants in the Solomon Islands without presenting any proof. Poorly organized, the author jumps from topic to topic in a totally erratic and illogical way. He claims to have seen repeated UFO activity near Ironbottom Sound (near Guadalcanal) and repeats native legends about giant cannibals living in the unexplored interior of various islands. These sorts of claims, while interesting, are useless without any concrete evidence. Unless you are interested in reading about native folklore, I suggest you save your money.

Mr. Boirayon is a true-blue adventurer, who never seems to miss an opportunity to do something rash and get into trouble that most of us would not even think of.In his book, the Solomon Islands emerge as a true stomping grounds for the adventuresome. There are giants, cannibals, evil witchdoctors, UFOs in the sky, USOs in the water, malevolent ETs who fry people, tunnels underground, and nemesis coming from any direction. It all fits into that part of the world being much more raw than we know of in our more civilized places (if that's where you live). It is actually surprising that the author survived so many encounters, any one of which might have meant his last. As far as I'm aware, there are very few books with such stories which are first-hand experiences, so Boirayon's book is a very good read. Some of his stories come from the native folks and these are equally bizarre and fascinating.It's especially good to read the book in the safety of your living room, since most of us who might have somehow thought of visiting Solomon Islands will certainly never do that after reading this book (excluding any of our friends who might have a death wish). In addition to being ridiculously dangerous, the place is inhabited and run by less than pleasant people. Not counting cannibals and hostile ETs, the ordinary locals emerge as seriously unlikable folks--corrupt, lazy, treacherous, etc. etc.The only drawback to the book is that there are zero illustrations. Evidently, in Mr. Boirayon's adventurous career, all of his photograph collection was stolen when he was robbed at one point. May you live a long and happy life, Mr. Boirayon!

Funny side note to begin this review. I apparently had no clue how to spell “loneliest” before I began typing this title and spell check kept sneaking an extra “e” in there! Now I know! The Loneliest Girl in the Universe was such an entertaining, different, and surprisingly good book! I have heard so much about it lately and when it kept popping up I finally broke down and decided I needed to see what the hype was all about. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I’ll be honest, I was a little hesitant at first. But then I got swept away in the mind of the MC Romy and all of the emotions she was going through being the sole occupant of a spaceship called The Infinity that is heading to another planet, Earth 2. I can’t begin to imagine how I would feel knowing that all communication with anyone on Earth had a two year delay in response, and being millions upon millions of miles away from all other life. My palms start sweating just thinking about it!Being a book about a single character, alone, far away in outer space, there really isn’t a large cast of characters that you meet. There’s Romy the MC, her therapist from NASA named Molly (assigned to her after she sent word that her parents had died in an awful accident), and J who’s on another spaceship sent to help Romy get to Earth 2.  Yep, you read that right, NASA decided that after Romy having spent years completely alone captaining a spaceship all by herself since the age of 11, they are finally sending her help!!! And in the form of a man named J on a spaceship called The Eternity.Romy was actually born on the ship after her parents accidentally got pregnant in the early years of their space travel to Earth 2. So she has never known Earth or anything really besides The Infinity and all its nooks and crannies. She was raised there by her parents until a horrible accident kills them while she's only 11 years old, and she is then forced to run the spaceship all on her own. I found myself really connecting with Romy, the thoughts that ran through her head and the way she handles all the problems or questions she comes across are pretty realistic to how I would feel if ever stuck in the same circumstance. She craves touch, and love, and even just a conversation from anyone other than the halfway conversations in the emails she receives from Molly on a daily basis. The emails from Molly really aren’t conversations at all because as Romy gets further and further away from Earth, the longer it takes for her messages to reach Earth. And at the time we enter her story, it currently takes one year to make it to Earth and then another year for the response to arrive in Romy’s inbox. Two years just to get a response to any question she might have. I would go insane.The format the book is written consists of the emails Romy receives, her fanfic of Loch & Ness (which was some of my favorite to read) and then the rest from Romy’s POV and all the thoughts running through her head. It hit me about halfway through that it was weird to read a book with little to no dialogue. I didn't really notice it until Romy herself mentions at one point that she didn’t know if her voice still even worked, that she hadn’t actually spoken out loud in years. Can you even imagine that? I constantly talk to myself, so I know that wouldn’t be the same in my case, but who actually knows what it would be like to be so alone for so long. Maybe I would just cease to talk out loud, what’s the point when you are literally the only person around to hear it?!This book had one crazy twist of an ending that brought me to almost tears at one point. It goes from being a mellow adventure of a 17 year old girl to something of a thriller. I was biting my nails hoping that she would survive. It was interesting the way that things were revealed over time instead of all at once. And you learn just exactly what happened on the ship that Romy doesn’t want to remember, or speak of. The whirlwind of an end had me consuming this book faster than my brain could keep up.  I read this in less than 24 hours and finished it feeling like I had just gone on a deep space adventure myself! This was a great read, and it will stick with me for a while to come. I’ll be putting this pretty book up on the favorites shelf along with all my other beauties!

I knew there would be some kind of twist, but I was NOT PREPARED for the extent of the twist. This was a fun, quick read that was genuinely unsettling. I shouldn’t write more, because the less you know ahead of time, the better. Definitely recommended.

Romy might be The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, but she has a lot to deal with out in space! Author Lauren James skillfully plants plot seeds throughout that kept me flipping through to see what happened, and even though I didn't mean to, I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. to see what happened!!!! Kudos to the author for creating a complex heroine and on great world building inside the space ship. Lots of plots twists and turns make for an ending I didn't see coming. Sci-fi/thriller/mystery for ages 12 to adult, and don't let the title fool you ... this is a book boys will enjoy too.

This started off really well. I loved all of the science talk/references and I just love all things space. But this is definitely a true young adult fiction with predictable plots and a predictable ending. Although I think this would be an amazing read for someone 11-16, it just wasn’t what I was hoping for.

Great read! Strong female protagonist with a definite taste of high math and physics. This is great for girls with an interest in science, but guys will love this thriller as well. Loved the plot twist and it is beautifully crafted. It is on my nomination list for my Top Ten Best Reads of the year.

Great original story line. Kept me guessing until the end. Loved it.

I’m so glad I received a recommendation to read this book. It is beautifully written, and edited. This story will keep you guessing and questioning almost to the end. Highly recommended.

This is a good resource for someone who is in a position where they need to be able to counsel people sometimes but may not have any formal training. The author is a well respected professional in the field of Christian counseling.

Very understandable and this book has a lot of good knowledge in it.

This is an insightful book. It was required for my Pastoral Counseling class and will be one of those books I return to often. Biblically based but not deep theologically so it is easy to digest and practice.

I'm loving this book! So easy to understand and so practical on the examples!Highly recommend to any Christian Counselour, or anybody who wants to help people in crisis and trauma.

After reading this book for class I find that Wright is someone I would like to sit down to dinner with. He speaks directly to the point, his chapters are not a word longer than they need to be, and he has a love for those needing help and us in the helping professions. Great book, practical advice, and parsimoniously written.
