Funny side note to begin this review. I apparently had no clue how to spell “loneliest” before I began typing this title and spell check kept sneaking an extra “e” in there! Now I know! The Loneliest Girl in the Universe was such an entertaining, different, and surprisingly good book! I have heard so much about it lately and when it kept popping up I finally broke down and decided I needed to see what the hype was all about. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I’ll be honest, I was a little hesitant at first. But then I got swept away in the mind of the MC Romy and all of the emotions she was going through being the sole occupant of a spaceship called The Infinity that is heading to another planet, Earth 2. I can’t begin to imagine how I would feel knowing that all communication with anyone on Earth had a two year delay in response, and being millions upon millions of miles away from all other life. My palms start sweating just thinking about it!Being a book about a single character, alone, far away in outer space, there really isn’t a large cast of characters that you meet. There’s Romy the MC, her therapist from NASA named Molly (assigned to her after she sent word that her parents had died in an awful accident), and J who’s on another spaceship sent to help Romy get to Earth 2.  Yep, you read that right, NASA decided that after Romy having spent years completely alone captaining a spaceship all by herself since the age of 11, they are finally sending her help!!! And in the form of a man named J on a spaceship called The Eternity.Romy was actually born on the ship after her parents accidentally got pregnant in the early years of their space travel to Earth 2. So she has never known Earth or anything really besides The Infinity and all its nooks and crannies. She was raised there by her parents until a horrible accident kills them while she's only 11 years old, and she is then forced to run the spaceship all on her own. I found myself really connecting with Romy, the thoughts that ran through her head and the way she handles all the problems or questions she comes across are pretty realistic to how I would feel if ever stuck in the same circumstance. She craves touch, and love, and even just a conversation from anyone other than the halfway conversations in the emails she receives from Molly on a daily basis. The emails from Molly really aren’t conversations at all because as Romy gets further and further away from Earth, the longer it takes for her messages to reach Earth. And at the time we enter her story, it currently takes one year to make it to Earth and then another year for the response to arrive in Romy’s inbox. Two years just to get a response to any question she might have. I would go insane.The format the book is written consists of the emails Romy receives, her fanfic of Loch & Ness (which was some of my favorite to read) and then the rest from Romy’s POV and all the thoughts running through her head. It hit me about halfway through that it was weird to read a book with little to no dialogue. I didn't really notice it until Romy herself mentions at one point that she didn’t know if her voice still even worked, that she hadn’t actually spoken out loud in years. Can you even imagine that? I constantly talk to myself, so I know that wouldn’t be the same in my case, but who actually knows what it would be like to be so alone for so long. Maybe I would just cease to talk out loud, what’s the point when you are literally the only person around to hear it?!This book had one crazy twist of an ending that brought me to almost tears at one point. It goes from being a mellow adventure of a 17 year old girl to something of a thriller. I was biting my nails hoping that she would survive. It was interesting the way that things were revealed over time instead of all at once. And you learn just exactly what happened on the ship that Romy doesn’t want to remember, or speak of. The whirlwind of an end had me consuming this book faster than my brain could keep up.  I read this in less than 24 hours and finished it feeling like I had just gone on a deep space adventure myself! This was a great read, and it will stick with me for a while to come. I’ll be putting this pretty book up on the favorites shelf along with all my other beauties!

I knew there would be some kind of twist, but I was NOT PREPARED for the extent of the twist. This was a fun, quick read that was genuinely unsettling. I shouldn’t write more, because the less you know ahead of time, the better. Definitely recommended.

Romy might be The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, but she has a lot to deal with out in space! Author Lauren James skillfully plants plot seeds throughout that kept me flipping through to see what happened, and even though I didn't mean to, I stayed up until 3:30 a.m. to see what happened!!!! Kudos to the author for creating a complex heroine and on great world building inside the space ship. Lots of plots twists and turns make for an ending I didn't see coming. Sci-fi/thriller/mystery for ages 12 to adult, and don't let the title fool you ... this is a book boys will enjoy too.

This started off really well. I loved all of the science talk/references and I just love all things space. But this is definitely a true young adult fiction with predictable plots and a predictable ending. Although I think this would be an amazing read for someone 11-16, it just wasn’t what I was hoping for.

Great read! Strong female protagonist with a definite taste of high math and physics. This is great for girls with an interest in science, but guys will love this thriller as well. Loved the plot twist and it is beautifully crafted. It is on my nomination list for my Top Ten Best Reads of the year.

Great original story line. Kept me guessing until the end. Loved it.

I love watching a Korean reality show where the subject goes up a hill and forages for edible herbs and fruits, such as wild spring onions, mugworts, berries, and the like. They seem to like the fresh salads they make out of what they have harvested and now, I wonder, if that is possible in the US. When I saw this book online, I just had to buy it. I am dreaming of just trekking to a small hill and just forage around in search of edible and medicinal herbs but I am still hesitant to do so because I am not expert in identifying the plants. I just wished this book had pictures.

Little more then pictures and a paragraph. Some of the pictures were so poor, I hardly recognized plants I'd intentionally planted in my own back yard. I wouldn't want to count on this for identifying anything that had the potential to be poisonous.

A book about foraging with no pictures, glad I didn't pay for it.

Interesting book. Basic information.

Quite an informative guide. Does a fairly good job of keeping a person alive in less hospitable environments. Isn't very comprehensive, though. I mean, I have about a dozen Daedra Hearts and I still have no idea what to do with them!

Haven't really had time to sit down and read this yet, but am sure to enjoy it.

There are no pictures, therefore I can't recommend this book to beginners. It has some basic information but without examples and pictures its some what dangerous.

This book was a joy to read and was filled with intricate knowledge and curiosity about the geese and their migration as well as an exquisitely detailed account of the passion of one man to journey wth these birds and along the way to discover interesting and kindly folk.

Received in great condition in timely manner and followup to be sure I got what I wanted when I needed it was excellent. Story is fascinating as well. All around a good deal!

This book will entertain those who enjoy travel memoirs, natural history-lite, and don't mind long forays into description and philosophy.This nonfiction book was inspired by Paul Gallico's, "The Snow Goose" (1940). The author begins with a recollection of this story and then briefly describes his protracted illness at the age of 25 with an illness. After returning to his family home to recover Fiennes decides to take a journey to trace the snow goose's spring migration. Starting in Austin, Texas, and tracing the flight of birds in rental cars, greyhound busses, and Canadian trains he arrives at Baffin Island where the birds have their summer mating and foraging grounds.Describing the migratory pattern of snow geese could be a straightforward and dry narrative, but intertwined with the geese's journey is Fiennes's personal homeward journey propelled by the people he meets along the way and seemingly the philosophical musings sprinkled throughout the book. An example of the tangential flights of fancy which the author takes is that of homesickness. First drawing on those who first identified and defined homesickness as a malady, and then expanding with literary illustrations such as "The Odyssey," Fiennes describes his feeling of homesickness. Unfortunately the connection between homesickness and seasonal bird migration is not made, nor can it be really.The description of people and places in this book are detailed. Sometimes too much so. Since the people described are frequently peripheral to the story, fellow passengers on the bus or train, the story sometimes loses focus. The natural scenes in contrast are more apt and so the detail is not begrudged: "There were hills and swales in all directions, drawing away on the curve of the sphere, and clouds massing in the south, above the sea" (p. 240). The combination of natural description, and the description of all people encountered joined with the personal rumination of the author makes for an odd amalgamation of literary genres.
