By the end of the first story we were hooked.Don’t worry if you aren’t an outdoorsy type person. The humor in these books will appeal to anyone. In fact, several of the stories are written from the perspective of an old hand giving a newcomer to the outdoor life some sage advice – like Gunkholing, A Brief History of Boats and Marriage, How to Get Started in Bass Fishing, and At Loose Ends.Quite a lot of the collection actually focuses on stories about young Patrick’s life on the farm, and his adventures with his dog Strange and his best friends Crazy Eddie and Retch Sweeney. This includes Kid Brothers and Their Practical Application, The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw, Scritch’s Creek, The Tin Horn, Cupidity, Draw Thy Bow, and Never Cry ‘Arp!’The title story, featuring Crazy Eddie’s grandmother Goombaw, never fails to cheer me up. Even to this day, I laugh at loud at this story… actually, even re-reading this for the umpteenth time, I still laughed at loud several times.

You can't go wrong with McManus. Years ago when my kids were young (now 32&35), we would all sit on the bed and read his stories out loud. You don't have to hunt or fish to enjoy the humor. Now when my husband has trouble falling asleep I read to him in bed. It's a fun and natural way to drift off.

I've learned never to eat or drink anything while reading Pat McManus' books -- I'll either choke to death or spray everyone around me with a mouthfull of food! I'm living with a painful disability, and have found the uncontrollable hilarity that comes with a McManus book is a better opiate than a syringe-full of morphine. I'm not kidding, either; only this author can turn a wilderness predicament into nosebleeding laughter -- if you can't howl at the adventures of two ten-year-old boys (Retch Sweeny and our intrepid author in his younger days) and Rancid Crabtree, their crusty swamp-dwelling sidekick, along with a town of long-suffering citizens and the boys' put-upon parents, you simply have no appreciation for literary slapstick.

I've always loved Patrick McManus' humor, which I was first exposed to in my youth when he wrote for Field & Stream magazine. On a whim, I decided to purchase the Kindle version of this book and I was magically transported to my teenaged years. I had just finished reading the chapter that has the same name as the book when my 87 year old mother dropped by for a visit. She asked why my cheeks were wet and I had to admit that was laughing so hard that I cried. She wanted to hear what was so funny, so I read the chapter aloud to he. Near the end if the chapter, she was begging me to stop so that she could catch her breath. Yes, Patrick can still entertain me but now I know that my Mom might enjoy some of his books for Christmas. I recommend everything that Patrick has ever written, especially his collections of short stories like this one. It will take you back to a more innocent time in life and will hopefully help to lift the burden of you problems for a short time.

Still one of the funniest books by one of the funniest writers out there. I'm so glad it was finally available electronically. McManus has a gift for landing already hilarious characters with the perfect, personality matching monikers which tells the lucky reader he's in for a treat. Who wouldn't want to read about the catastrophic adventures of Crazy Eddie Muldoon, or the loyal but hapless Retch Sweeney? And Goombaw---could there be a more foreshadowing name? It guarantees a future of laughter. Terrific fun.

I bought this book as a gift , and the person that I gave it to was very pleased with it. I have been a McManus fan for lots of years. When I need something to cheer me up, I get out one of my McManus books and he has me laughing in no time at all. Do your self a favor especially if you are the least bit " outdoorsie" read this book, you should love it.

I read this as a kid. Loved every story.I bought this copy for my mom, who volunteers at a church run grade school. She can read it herself for enjoyment, or she can read it to the zealots' little bastard spawn who make her life hell.

I first read this book in 1971 while attending college and working on degrees in natural resource management and urban geography in preparation for a career in land use planning. It was a ground breaking book for its time and sad to say the principles and land use planning processes covered are still absent from land use planning in the United States.This is a book that should be mandatory reading for anyone going into politics as these individuals along with developers make 99% of the land use planning decisions at the local and state levels. Concepts covered in this book like clustered development are being used today for developments that are in direct opposition to open space and public commons preservation.Our forced reliance on the automobile has led to suburban sprawl and rural micro ranches, orchard, and vineyards, that are environmentally destructive and wasteful of limited resources which reinforces the cycle. Without concentrated locations of housing at adequate densities to support light rail and other necessary infrastructure the overall living environment for current and future generations will continue to be degraded as it is devalued.

I bought this on my Landscape Architect's suggestion, to help me understand his philosophy for steering nature rather than overriding nature.I was immediately drawn into the prose. It's quite a treatise, and deserves to be read attentively, not thumbed through. (Although it's admittedly fun to thumb through, owing to the interesting illustrations).

A "classic" in the field of Landscape Architecture and still well worth reading closely. We knew the Jersey Shore which got developed and then wiped clean by a hurricane in the 1960's. Ian's graduate students and he worked with the State of New Jersey on code recommendations for Long Beach Island during the immediate aftermath. Fast forward to today....Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are complex databases that organize information into the "layers" that McHarg proposed. GIS analysis has found its way into urban planning, oil spill response, wildfire management, epidemiology, endangered species management, socio-economic analysis and many other forms of spatial planning and design. Maps that are products of GIS analysis are digital versions of the tissue and mylar overlays of McHarg's vision and technique. This book is recommended reading. The book depicts where the life of a hustler can lead him. It also gives an inside veiw of how lonley a hustler's wife can be. Which if she truly loves her man, can be a very lonley life without him. Suave and Sincere are the couple who are put to the test. They are forced to live apart after Suave receives a three year prison sentance for defending himself against a robber. Ultimately their love is tested. Will Suave drive himself crazy wondering what the love of his life is doing while he is locked up? Will Sincere be strong without her man to lean on? or will she get weak and stray? Buy the book and find out. "No Exit" and "Block Party" are Mr Banks previous books, "Sincerely Yours" being the third book in his "True 2 Life Street Series". All three books are excellent reads. "Sincerely yours" concludes questions that were unanswered in the first two books. The design of the cover is eye catching and fits right in with the plot. Only one thing Mr Banks...The book lost credibility upon its conclusion...That was definitely a NO, NO. So you only get four stars.

Al-Saadiq did a masterful job of bringing No Exit and Block Party together while also giving us the often overlooked aspect of the street life. This book tells the real story of what happens when you have to go away and do the time for your crime. How it effects not only you but everyone closest to you.

Once again I must come back on here and give Mr. Banks his acknowledgements on another great story. Sincerely Yours is such a good story I am at a lost of words to describe it. If you are a true fan and have read the first two you will really appreciate the story Mr. Banks is giving us. He brought in new characters with a completely different story line.Suave and Sincere relationship is one many people wish for. A man who doesn't cheat or hasn't the whole 10 years now that in itself was great. LOL no really their story was just so good and well put together. The addition of the old characters and their conclusions in this one was a great surprise. If you have not read any of his books honestly you will love all 3 you have to start with NO EXIT in order to appreciate the rest of them. Continued success and much love to Mr. Banks and his family.I had the pleasure of talking to Mr. Banks personally not once did he mention the conclusion to my favorite two street stories. The only thing left to say is THIS IS A MUST READ!

WOW!!! This was a GREAT book! This is one of those books that makes you want to throw your kindle across the room because you are just that mad with one of the characters... LOL I love how the author integrated the characters from Block Party 1 into the story... I'm not one to spoil a story so I won't give any descriptive details but, I will tell you that the ending is a true shocker. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would! I'm now a NEW and TRUE fan of Al-Saadiq Banks!!!

This story is captivating take you into the life of a couple.who lives are interrupted by circumstance....and what can happen in my eyes if your weak or easily influenced.....a great read a must read...ASB IS THE TRUTH

I loved how this book was more about reality than fairytales. The ending was awesome. The book was awesome. I couldn't put it down after reading the first page.
