Usually when I buy a book, I feel I get my money's worth as long as I can get something out of it. It is very rare when the entire book becomes an invaluable resource. This is such a book. This book contains excellent maps and directions and includes numerous B&W pictures and illustrations. There is also a color panel in the middle. When I say detailed directions I mean DETAILED. The author tells you what landmarks to look for, what exit to get off, how the road winds and breaks the distances down to a tenth of a mile. It is also written in a very easy to follow and understand text. The highlight of the book for me is the detailed breakdown of Nine Mile Canyon. I was not intending on doing nine mile canyon due to a shortage of time and thinking I would need a guide to find many of the sites. The book describes the trip in such detail you feel like you are on a tour. Besides Utah, the author also writes about some sites in Nevada, Arizona and Colorado. Before I purchased this book, I thought I would only get to see a few rock art panels at the more popoular destinations. After reading this book, I now know that there are many more sites I can visit. Hopefully, those who are intersted in this book will also heed the authors plea to be respectful of the sites. His book speaks about way to many instances of idiots vandalizing these treasures and destroying them for the future generations. Bottom line is that this is a must have for anyone serious about seeing rock art in Utah.

I'm not easily satisified with guides, but this one appears to be an exception. It fits the need of those of us who enjoy and appreciate indigenous art and the wilderness that typically accompanies it. There are numerous maps, excellent directions, a section of color pictures, and good insights.

This is the best and most responsible guide to the rock art of Utah I have seen. It is well written and researched, the maps are excellent and so are the directions. It's a winner.

What is it then? A very well researched second and third hand account of the dastardly life of Norwegian immigrant Brynhild "Belle" Gunness.The book pulls together accounts (sometimes very dry) of court documents and personal remembrances that paint a picture of what "might have happened".What is the best part of the book? I loved the parts of the book that were photographs of Belle herself, dead husbands. missing farm help, newspaper clippings and little animated vignettes (it was really the glue that kept my attention). It's called"Kindle in Motion" and it was a cool feature.Is there "mystery" like the book promised? Yes there is! I'm not going to drop any spoilers here but the story does not wrap up neat and tidy so you will be left with a gnawing mystery which may upset those who can't put a puzzle down UNTIL they have solved it. Surprisingly, for being such a heinous subject matter there was not much gore or gruesome details that one might expect with a body count in the backyard.Why only 3 stars?? Well it is really very close to 4 but given the over hype of a gripping suspenseful narrative it fell short of the mark. Also a full 34% of this book is footnotes.(I told you the book was well researched). Only 260 pages of the book actually deal with the murders, mutilations and speculations. (which goes to show you that the author did his homework).I was never riveted, merely piqued.

I found this a fascinating read. If want blood and guts throughout a book, this isn't for you. A lot of research has been done so Schechter tells the story of the town before, during and after the discovery of the bodies on Belle's farm. Only about the first 25% of the book deals with with the murders attributed to Belle. I found the newspaper articles fascinating, as well as the reactions from the pulpit. As to be expected for the time and place, there is sexism and racism. There is really no answer as to what happened to Belle, so that may unsatisfying for some readers. I was surprised to find that there was a trial, but I believe that trial result had more to do with the jury's reaction to the lifestyle of the person on trial rather than any factual evidence.It appears to be a well-researched book that is very frank when sources don't agree. The story telling is top notch, and the writing clean and tight.

This book details the crimes of female seral killer Belle Gunness, an interesting twist on the typical male serial killer story. It leads the reader through the purchase of her farm which was the setting for her crimes and continues with Belle luring and killing her victims.I like true crime novels and loved the unique perspective of this particular story. The book also provides some content about the case like photographs, newspaper articles, and original art that I felt added depth and interest.

(SPOILERS)“...real life often presents us with criminal mysteries that stubbornly, even maddeningly, resist solution.” Page 258That quote is like this whole book in a single quote. I love real life murder mysteries, but I want a conclusion and I was hoping there was a definitive answer to this mystery of Belle Gunness but like everyone else, I will be left wondering with my own theories.I both liked and disliked this book. Belle Gunness is a compelling character and her life was crazy. That was interesting to me to learn about. Truth is stranger than fiction. However, 35% of this book was just reference notes. Don't get me wrong - that is awesome because then you get to know that the author had legit sources for the things he details in this book. BUT I didn't realize just how much of the end of this book wasn't actual story line so I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, the twist at the end that proved that she was still alive or something. At 40% I was thinking, no way does it just end like that and then go into a trial buuuuuuut....thats exactly what it was. I am glad I got to see what happened to all the important people surrounding Belle and her deeds, but I am disappointed to not know for absolutely sure that it was her in the house (I honestly do not think it was).On a side note, the art and animation that was in the kindle version to enhance the story was fun. I really enjoyed that. I am bummed that it only worked on the kindle app but not on the amazon cloud reader on the computer though.

I guess I wasn't paying attention when I chose this book as my Kindle First Reads. I thought I was choosing historical fiction....turns out it was not fiction. I was not disappointed.I did not know about the "Lady Bluebeard," and I found this story riveting. I love history, and the author does a good job presenting the events in a way that makes the book seem at times like a story and not a history book.This was also my first Kindle in Motion. I really enjoyed the format with the pictures and animation. I will definitely be reading more books of this type.

About the Author

Jim Jones is an Idaho native, who grew up on his family s farm in Eden. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1964 and received his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago in 1967. Jim served as an artillery officer in the U.S. Army, including a 13-month tour in Vietnam. He served as legislative assistant to former U.S. Senator Len B. Jordan for three years, commencing in 1970. He started a law practice in Jerome in 1973 and maintained it until he was elected as Idaho Attorney General in 1982. Jim served two elected terms as Attorney General. He received the Idaho Water Statesman of 1990 Award from the Idaho Water Users Association. Following the completion of his second term, he established a private law practice in Boise, which he maintained until being elected to the Idaho Supreme Court in 2004. He was re-elected in 2010. Jim served as Chief Justice from August 2015 until his retirement from the Supreme Court in January 2017. He is married to Boise author Kelly Jones. They have three children and eight grandchildren.

I am very glad the author took the time to write and publish A Little Dam Problem. The Swan Falls controversy needed to be documented by someone who witnessed it first hand, and who deeply understands the subject matter. The author certainly fits the bill. His book does an excellent job providing a complete overview of the issue, and at exposing the reader to the key players and personalities involved. It should provide to any reader a thorough understanding of the events leading to, and resulting in, the historic Swan Falls Agreement. There is no better overview of the Swan Falls controversy in my opinion.

This is a "David and Goliath" story. And, at the very least, one that High Schools Teachers in Idaho should make mandatory for students to read. It shows courage, patience, love of country! Taking on the "big boys", taking the high road, is easy to say but it takes tenacity, strength and a real caring about what is right to go the distance! Students need people they can look up to....... Jim Jones is one of those people.

A surprisingly good read. A real world illustration of how our democracy, federal system and separation of powers work. This would be a great book for a high school civics reading list.

My 3rd grade son, Alex, had to do a book report on a nonfiction book. He chose this book because they share the same first name. My son struggles with reading, but his teacher really wanted him to try to read a book that was grade level appropriate, and this book fit that criteria. This book was very difficult for him, and he would not have made it through the book on his own. He read the entire book out loud, to me. We did one chapter per day for 10 days, and we were done. There was a lot of information in the book that was not only new to my son, but to me as well. I have now purchased several other "Who Was" books for my children. My 6th grader is the most interested in these books. She loves to read nonfiction. The reading level is probably too easy for her, but she enjoys them anyway, and she is learning about famous people in history!

Got this for a science book report, but also love that he actually learned so much and was excited to learn so much about Mr. Bell. He still remembers lots of facts about Mr. Bell that I (as a teacher) had never known before.
