I'm not sure why this is showing as the first review as I see the hard copy already has reviews. Amazon really should link them as it's the same story. I purchased this book today simply to support and author friend of someone I know on Facebook. Little was I expecting to not only read the book but finish it in the same day. Generally I do not care for fantasy fiction books that have young teenagers or children as the heroes or heroines. So when I saw that the star of this book was only 9 I almost didn't read any further. But I'm very glad that I did. The book indeed holds your attention throughout. It has been a long time since I've been able to actually sit and read a fantasy fiction book; so I'm glad the circumstances of today pushed me toward reading this one. It has rekindled the fire that I had for this genre. I hope one day to read a version with a bit older Deidre and Culain :)
Read it before giving it to my Grandson. I liked it. Enough adult content to keep me turning pages. Great imagery. Do not have to be Irish to get into the excitement. You do get set up for the next book in the series, which I will buy as soon as it is available.
Deidre's Dawn is a delightful story of a young girl in ancient Ireland. Deidre and her friend Culain find themselves drawn into a land of enchantment and mystery as they seek to avoid abusive homes and discover the truth about their past.The story is fun for children, but adults will enjoy it, too. I was thoroughly charmed by McFadden's writing skills. The story is told by Deidre in a wonderful style that offers rich and compelling descriptions especially as their journey leads them into the Enchanted Forest. I especially liked Gabrielle and Nacham; they were brilliant and unique and worth the entire story by itself.I bought my copy directly from the author when he was doing a book-signing at Barnes & Noble earlier this year. I'm so glad I did. I can highly recommend this book. An easy five stars.
Deidre's Dawn takes the reader on a delightful adventure. The author has developed the character of young Deidre beautifully; she is filled with life-force energy which supports her in remaining alive and strong despite her oppressive environment. This story is meant for people of all ages, especially those who appreciate the mythical and magical realm of life...something we all need right now in our high-tech, fast paced society.
I am a young adult female and received this book as a gift since I am Irish and love a good story! This tale draws you into an enchanted forest with fairies and the like, and illuminates how love triumphs over fear or evil. There is never a dull moment and the main character (female) inspires growth and empowerment. I think young ladies who are searching for their identity will especially enjoy this book! It is a fun read for adults as well. Looking forward to Book Two!!
I was reading this to see if it might be good for nieces and nephews. Was disappointed and found it too ridiculous even for children's fantasy, and painfully "precious".
Except for the fact that I had to go to work, I couldn't put this book down. It grabbed and held my attention immediately. I loved the details and the characters. Can't wait for the next book!
In this Irish tale, the female protagonist, Deidre, wrestles between listening to the inner voices of confidence or fear. She also discovers the power of love.
